More pictures from TDRP...
29th October: With batteries recharged by a holiday in the USA, Eurodragster staffer Tog has updated his personal web site
Tog's Drag Racing Page with pictures from Super Series 5 at Avon Park Raceway and the remaining Sportsman, Junior Dragster and Bike pictures from Super Series 4. In addition, TDRP is now hosting a set of US photographer Bob Frye's pictures from this year's US Nationals at Indianapolis.

...But not what Tom's looking for.
29th October: Tom Rayner, a member of the crew of Steve Pateman's street-legal Pontiac-powered Vauxhall Calibra, is looking for pictures of Steve's car, specifically launch shots from the FIA European Finals where the front wheels were lifting. Tom has not been able to find any such pictures on the Internet (Sorry, Tom - embarrassed Staff Photographer); if anyone out there has any pictures of Steve Pateman's car which fit the bill then please e-mail Tom on tom_468@hotmail.com.

CBD Top Fuel Team Season Review.
28th October: Knut Soderquist, Owner of the Carbon By Design Top Fuel team, has kindly sent us the following review of the teams first year of FIA Top Fuel Drag Racing:

"What a tremendous year it has been, full of highs and lows. After 5 years of planning it finally happened. When Harlan Thompson and I called it a day with racing the Funny Car, I sold a lot of my funny car parts to Alan Jackson. Alan's talent soon became obvious to me, so I approached Alan with a view to driving my Top Fuel Car. I was very impressed with the way he handled the car and also with his expertise of the fuel system and clutch management. Alan and I decided to bring my old friend Bill Schultz over from the U.S.A as a technical advisor to give the team tips. His input was obviously very valuable to the team. We are hoping to have him back next year to advise us.

"The win at Mantorp Park was a high, shortly followed a few weeks later to the low of having the #1 car involved in a scary top end crash, fortunately no-one was hurt, but the car was a write-off.

"To have Robin Read win the Finals in the #2 car was more than I had expected, and I would like to thank all the team members for turning that car around for the Final and for their help all year, good job guys!

"On balance I am very pleased with the year, and a new #1 car has already been purchased from the U.S.A for the 2000 season, the #2 car will be run next year if a certain amount of sponsorship can be raised to make it practical.

"Through Bill we have had an interesting offer from an East Coast Track in the U.S.A for a 4 or 5 match race deal in 2000; a decision will soon have to be made, whether to leave the #1 car in the USA, or ship it back to the UK to compete in the FIA rounds."

STOP PRESS: CBD Racing is not taking six months off for the winter break but will be attempting (track conditions permitting) to run the first five second run in Malta on 4th and 5th December!!!!!! WATCH THIS SPACE

Honeymoon over for Showtime.
25th October: Or more specifically the honeymoon is over for Chris, the webmaster of the
Showtime Website. Having returned from his honeymoon Chris has recovered sufficiently to bring the teams website up to date with features about both the October meeting and the teams eventful time at the Euro Finals meeting back in September. Chris is not just the webmaster, he works on the fuel funnycar at the races so the reports offer an interesting insight as to what goes on in the pits of one of these nitro burning monsters.

Supertwins round-up.
25th October: Ian Turboville has sent us the following press release from the UK National Association of Supertwins.

"The National Association of Supertwins drag racing club had their best season ever in 1999 and continue to go from strength to strength. Their inclusion in Obsession Motorsports' Super-Series at Avon Park Raceway proved to be a major success for all concerned and big thanks must go to both organisations. Highlight of the year was the appearance of the mighty 'Euro-Serie' Top-Gas, Harleys and Ducatis from Holland and Germany. They were so impressed with the track and the event that they have made it a permanent fixture on their calendar."

http://www.dragracing.se/) with more more news items including a preview of the upcoming Bilsport Performance show which is held in Jnkping between the 29th and 30th of October. The guys from Svensk will be at the show so stay tuned to their site for more info.

Drag Race Parts.
21st October: For those of you that may be struggling to find the parts you need in Eurodragsters Swap-Meet section might like to try Drag Race Parts. This is a new American site which offers the same sort of buy and sell area as the swap-meet. The site is still very new but will doubtless grow with time.

This Parrot is Deceased.
20th October: Rising from the ashes of Dead Goat Racing comes the latest incarnation of this UK sportsman ET team, now going under the Monty Pythonesque banner of Dead Parrot Racing. We don't as yet know the full story behind the name but team member and webmaster Tim Fowler has promised to tell Eurodragster the full story over a beer next season. Check out the teams new website at
http:\\www.justsolutions.ltd.uk\dpindex.htm for more details.

October Meet Timing Data.
20th October: After doing an admirable job of covering the October meeting on his own TonyB has now made the timing data from that meeting available from his own website. You can find it at http://www.eurodragster.com/tonyb

Sharkman's 1st Birthday.
20th October: Yes, Eurodragster staffer Sharkman has just turned one year old. No, we are not talking about his mental age (thats still measured in months) but about his website. To celebrate this sharkman has produced a set of windows wallpapers of some of his favourite photo's, so if you fancy desecrating your desktop, head over to http://www.btinternet.com/~sharkman

Top UK Junior Award.
19th October: Stephen Talbot writes to tell us that the final positions in the Manumit Computers/Talbot Racing Top Junior Drag Racer of the Year award have been announced. They are:

1. Phil Cook.
2. Katy Gibbs.
3. Kane Jones.
4. Paul Lindley-Allen.
5. Jack Hewitt.
6. Ben Jones.

Stephen goes on to say "We are really pleased with the reaction from the young drivers to our programme this year. Some trophies went to youngsters who do not have their own car and therefore only raced at a couple of meetings.

"The overall winner was based on an average of all of the dialled-in runs over at least three race meetings. Phil ran good times and had the best average of all of the runs in eliminations - which are the only runs which count. The qualifying runs were ignored as they were on a fixed dial in.

"Finally, congratulations to the team, Alan Jnr, and most of all Phil, for putting in some great times."

Svensk Updates.
19th October: Christer Abrahamson has been in contact to let us know that our good friends at

And Pro Street News.
19th October: Last but not least in the update stakes is The Pro Street News Website which is now showing some pictures from the Power Street Finals, with more on the way in a week or so.

Seen the film, read the book, now...
14th October: Drag racing and self-confessed "noise" fan Paul Williams has come to the rescue of fans wondering how they are going to make it through the closed season, by producing an audio CD which brings to your lounge the complete atmosphere of a day at the races. Paul wandered Santa Pod Raceway with some high-tech recording equipment at this year's Main Event and Cannonball, and has edited together an hour or so of the results.

As you would expect the CD contains the sounds of a range of cars and bikes, recorded from various parts of the spectator areas. For example, the opening track is a run by the "Fireforce" Jet Funny Car recorded about 1000 feet down the track, and very soon after is a superb start-line recording of Al Jackson putting in a burnout and half-pass in the CBD Top Fueller, a track which one of the Eurodragster staff (and, indirectly, his wife) has discovered can shake the floor in a most authentic manner if played at the correct volume.

But Paul has gone beyond this by including a range of other sound bites from the track: work in the pits, conversations on the spectator bank, and highlights from the repertoire of track announcers Graham Beckwith and Paul Venners including the inevitable lost-child announcement. These combined with the racing sounds turn the CD into a documentary of a typical day at the track: all you have to do to complete the experience is to spend two hours queuing to get out of your living room.

The insert booklet contains pictures and quotes from drag racing literature.

The CD costs £10.75 including postage and packing and is available in the following ways:

Which Bike? Weekend an unqualified success.
13th October: Watched by over 4000 hungry bike fanatics, the Which Bike? Weekend, incorporating the final outing for the Streetfighters magazine Straightliners Series, at Avon Park was an unqualified success.
Former Supertwins rider Richard Stubbins was the surprise package of the weekend when he out-dragged defending champion Dean Williamson. Stubbins, on board a 1260cc Suzuki GSXR, laid down an 8.83 at 163mph to Williamson's 8.92 from the Suzuki turbo. This was the first time all season that Williamson had met his match. In the no-breakout 11.90 class Alan Tinnion took his 492cc Yamaha past the 750cc Suzuki of Mark Wells, 11.51 to 11.91. Earlier, in the semis, Tinnion dipped past the 850cc Triton of former Supertwins rider Bob Cornforth. The 1000cc Yamaha of David Mustoe took the 10.90 class with an 11.00/133mph against the quicker 10.99 put down by the 750cc Suzuki of Ian Wallis. 9.90 combatants Craig Mallabone and Darren Cross found themselves in the final where due to a staging foul largely on the part of Mallabone tripping the guard beam, Cross gained his first Straightliners victory, 9.95/141mph. The aforementioned Dean Williamson took the Top Bike honours with a 9.02 against the 1216 Suzuki GSXR of Wayne Little. York Dragway regular Rob Wilkinson ran a succession of low 8's on his Suzuki to take the Comp Bike class against Alan Tinnion's second machine, a 492cc RD500 Yamaha.
Out of competition but in RWYB mode was the Top Gas Jade Yamaha of Sheffield Stealer, Jerry Collier. Trying out a new combination and a host of trick bits, Jerry came so close to beating his own 9.6 second world record and he was definitely looking for a 9.5 over the weekend.
Over 150 machines, including the NSA classes, entertained the enthusiastic crowd which lined the track. However, the most appreciation shown went to stunt riders Dave Coates, Sonny Fergerson and Jason Finn. More so for Jason who spent most of his routine running up, down and across the grandstands on his Montessa trials bike. All in all a good weekend for Avon Park and certainly one for the year 2000 diary!

Thanks to Jeremy Cookson of APIRA for this report.

The 1999 UK Champions.
13th October: The remaining questions in this year's European drag racing scene were answered at last weekend's October Meet at Santa Pod Raceway, which settled the UK National and Santa Pod Racers' Club Championships. Here are the winners and runners-up in each class.

There were only eight rounds in the Pro Mod National Championship; it was formally won by Nick Davies at the rained-out Super Series Finals. Nick scored 598 points whilst Bert Englefield was runner-up with 523 points. Nick and Bert also took winner and runner-up in the SPRC Championship.

Wayne Saunders took the National Championship in Super Pro ET, despite not attending the final round, with 3020 points. Pat Talbot was runner-up with 2540 points. Wayne and Pat held the same positions in the SPRC Championship.

Luke Ramage won the National Super Gas Championship, with 5270 points to Frank Mason's 3380 runner-up, an impressive win margin of 1890 points. Luke also won the SPRC Championship whilst Ritchi Smith took second place from Frank Mason.

Jon Webster walked the Super Comp National Championship, his 4740 points giving him a whopping 2210-point lead over runner-up Tim Adam, who had 2530 points. Jon and Tim held the same positions in the SPRC Championship, Tim securing second place with his performance last weekend.

Team Top Banana, the roadster entry of Brian and Lee Huxley, took the National Championship in Super Street with 3030 points to runner-up Bob Lees' 2530 points. Whilst Team Top Banana also took the SPRC Championship, the runner-up placing went to Anne and Stuart Peck's Team Rat Rage: Team Rat Rage finished with an equal number of points to Bob Lees, and their placing had to be decided on the number of rounds won, after the first decider - the outcome to head-to-head meetings during the season - was also equal.

In Pro ET, Chris Johnson took the National Championship with 4570 points whilst Al Golding secured the runner-up spot with his win last weekend, ending up with 3790 points. Chris and Al were also winner and runner-up in the SPRC Championship.

The National Championship in Sportsman ET had a win margin of a mere ten points, Phil Walker's win at the weekend giving him the title with 3730 points to Rick Denny's 3720. The positions were reversed in the SPRC Championship where Rick Denny was winner and Phil Walker runner-up.

On two wheels, the ACU runs the National Championships in most classes and there are no SPRC Championships in those classes.

The National Championship in Top Fuel Bike was won by Steve Woollatt with 1420 points to Brian Johnson's 1365 points.

Tim Blakemore took the Championship in Funny Bike with 3035 points; Dave Abraham was runner-up with 2970 points.

Another whopping win margin in Pro Stock Bike, where Paul Willis amassed 4670 points to take the Championship with a 2210-point victory over runner-up Len Paget who had 2460 points.

In Competition Bike, Chris Hall took the Championship with 2940 points over his good friend Steve French who was runner-up with 2440 points.

Graham Dance was Champion in Super Street Bike with 5375 points; runner-up was Dave Holland with 4900 points.

In the non-ACU classes, Dave Bailey took the National Championship in 9.90 Bike with 4860 points to Grant Perrin's 3540 runner-up. In the SPRC Championship, Dave Bailey took the win whilst Jamie Sneddon was runner-up; however second, third (Grant) and fourth (Dave Hall) were separated by a mere fifty points.

In 10.90 Bike, Steve Templeman won the title with 3450 points to Paul Hambidge's 2900 points. Steve and Paul also took winner and runner-up in the SPRC Championship although third-placed Lee Baxter was only ten points behind Paul.

Congratulations to the winners, runners-up, and every single competitor in all of these Championships. Congratulations also to Santa Pod Racers Club, Avon Park International Racers Association and the Promoters Obsession Motorsports and Trakbak Racing for making this Championship happen.

There is one more race in the UK this season: the Flame and Thunder Show at Santa Pod on Saturday November 6th, at which the racers usually let their hair down a little. At this race there are only two classes - cars and bikes. Each class is one huge bracket, with racers setting their own dial-ins and buy-backs available after the first round. We will have more details of this event nearer the time.

PLR Motorsports update.
13th October: The official web site of
1999 Top Fuel Tour Champion Peter Lantz has been updated with news of the Top Fuel Tour 2000 and great new entries in the Photo and Movie Galleries. It is Peter's 40th birthday on October 15th; if you wish to send him a birthday greeting then you can find his e-mail address on the News page of the web site.

Top Fuel Tour 2000!
12th October: It has been announced that the Swedish Top Fuel Tour is to continue into the next century. Thanks to Pelle Lindelöw for translating the following Press Release:

"After a meeting during the past weekend between the promoters and participating teams in the 1999 Top Fuel Tour, it was decided that the Tour should continue into the year 2000. Everyone at the meeting agreed that the Top Fuel Tour has been a real success so far, although there is room for improvement in some areas.

"The Top Fuel Tour 2000 will continue in about the same manner as this season's Tour, and should be regarded as complementary to the FIA series. TFT 2000 will give its participants the chance to race on home ground, and will give Scandinavian fans the opportunity to see more good, tight Top Fuel racing. The race calendar will be planned in parallel with the planning of the FIA series and other big drag racing events in Europe, to find the best possible schedule for the teams and fans.

"It's too early to tell which will be the teams to challenge Peter Lantz, the winner of the 1999 Top Fuel Tour. But there is no doubt that they are going to do everything they can give him a real fight for the title!

"Stay tuned for more info".

You can find the official web site of the Top Fuel Tour at
http://www.topfueltour.com.

Pro Street News: New issue.
Äntligen nytt nr ute nu.

11th October: A new issue of the Swedish Pro Street News magazine is now on-line at
http://www.dunderklumpenracing.com/prostreetnews.

SPR update bonus.
11th October: Some additional reporting and extra photographs from this weekend's UK Championship-deciding October Meet at Santa Pod are now available on Santa Pod's web site.

Tog writes: I am sure that everyone out there will want to join Sharkman and myself in thanking and congratulating Tony B for doing such a sterling job in providing both reports and pictures from the October Meet all but single-handedly since we were not able to make the date. Thanks also to Spencer Tramm for assisting Tony as time permitted.

Andreasson Update.
8th October:
Leif Andreasson's web site has been updated with a full report on the team's efforts at the European finals and a video clip of Tog (watch out for one of Leif's runs in the background).

Updates from October Meet.
8th October: If you can't get to Santa Pod this weekend, a severely depleted Eurodragster will do his best to keep you updated, as part-timers ;-) Tog and Sharkman have other commitments. Supergas star Spencer Tramm has very kindly offered to help out so it may, after all, be worth checking out the reports on the Santa Pod web site.

Make mine a double, says Spencer.
7th October: Fans of UK Super Gas racer Spencer Tramm will be seeing twice as much of their hero at this weekend's October Meet at Santa Pod Raceway, since Spencer has entered his "Quantum Leap" Sierra in two classes. "We will be running Super Gas to try and protect our top ten Championship place for next year", says Spencer, "and as we have been running consistent 10.1s we will be trying our hand at Pro ET".

Simple enough you may think, but not so: Super Gas runs a Pro Tree whereas Pro ET runs a Sportsman Tree, and in Pro ET you have to set your own dial-in. The dial-in is not much of a problem for Spencer, who has been known to joke about setting up a new class named Spencer Gas with an index of 10.10, but the Tree is a different proposition. "I am a little apprehensive about having to change from a Sportsman to a Pro Tree five times in qualifying", says Spencer. "We have tried running the car on a Sportsman Tree before, with varying results: blatant redlights or afternoon naps. It won't be easy even with five runs to sort it out".

Doubling-up has become popular in the UK this season. Amongst its exponents are Tim Adam and Jon Webster who regularly run both Super Gas and Super Comp at the same race, and the Huxley family who have entered their "Top Banana" roadster in both Super Street and Pro ET.

Bishop's move.
7th October: Walking right into one of Eurodragster's dodgy headlines is UK Pro Stock Bike racer Martin Bishop, whose website has moved to
http://www.mbmotorsport.co.uk/. Check it out for all the news from MB Motorsports, and all the usual features from a good web site including a Photo Gallery.

ACU Points Updated.
6th October: Thanks to ACU Co-ordinator Ian King, the latest points standings for the ACU UK Dragbike Championships can now be found in our
Points Tables section. We hope to be able to give you the latest positions in the UK National Championships very soon.

Lex Joon Racing Update.
6th October: Dutch Top Alcohol Funny Car ace Lex has posted a report, in his own inimitable style, on the European Finals. As usual, his report gives an excellent insight into the thoughts and strategies of a top drag racer. You'll find the report in the NEWS section of the LJR web site.

Which Bike is at Avon Park.
6th October: Not a question, but a statement. This weekend Avon Park hosts the first Which Bike? Drag Racing Weekend and it promises to be huge. Attractions include the Grand Final round of the Streetfighters magazine Straightliners drag series, world record stunt bike attempts, NSA classes, bracket and Competition Bike classes. There's also a Run What Ya Brung, Classic Bike Show, stunt shows, win-a-bike competition, trade stands, off-road course and a fun fair. Admission is only 3 per day, half price for 12 - 16 year olds and under 12's go free. You'll find a map and directions to Avon Park on the Super Series web site. The fun starts at 10am on Satruday and 11am on Sunday.

Get your hands on the Predator.
4th October: The official web site of the
Predator Racing Competition Bike team has been updated with reports from recent races. The rolling chassis of the bike is now for sale; for more details see our Swap Meet pages or visit the Predator site direct.

Talbots advertise car, gain sponsor.
4th October: UK Super Pro ET and Pro ET team Talbot Racing have finally paused for breath after increasing the team from one car to three over the past few weeks. The team's current Super Pro ET dragster is now up for sale, and a new sponsor has come on board. Stephen Talbot writes:

"Pat and I would like to thank all of the people who helped us launch our new ventures over the last few weeks. Both the Toyota Celica and the new dragster have taken lots of effort on the part of the crew and all at Hauser Race cars, but we have seen good results for our efforts.

"With a number six qualifying spot for the Celica at the European Finals, and a solid 8.2 run on the new dragster, we are happy that both cars are going in the right direction for next season.

"The outcome of this is that our current Super Pro dragster, which has given us excellent service over the last two seasons, is now for sale. Please see the advert in Eurodragster's Swap Meet section for details.

"Finally we would like to welcome our latest associate sponsor: none other than Sharkman. He has provided funds to upgrade the front wheels on the Toyota to ensure that they are the same high quality as the excellent paint job recently completed by Bob Doyle, and we really appreciate his help. Thanks, Sharkman".

The Pie Boy speaks.
4th October: Young drag racing fan Richard Bell has given his web site a make-over so that it loads more quickly, and has added some new sections including a run-down on the Top Banana Super Street team. Check it out at http://members.tripod.com/richardthepieboy.

You may remember that a recent news item about Richard's site mentioned that he had not explained the "Pie boy" epithet. Richard has now explained; although not quite in the same class as Eurodragster staffer Tog, Richard perceives himself to be anorexically-challenged. As ever, Eurodragster presents the facts as supplied, without comment.

More Funny business.
3rd October: The
Shockwave Fuel FC team are upping the ante for next weekend's match race at the October Meet at Santa Pod.

Crew Chief and joint car owner Dave Bryant writes: "A new transmission is on its way from the USA to be fitted to the car at the October Meet. This, along with the new fuel system, should see the car comfortably into the Fives. The October Meet will be used as a test session for the new transmission, and hopefully we can pull off another win over John Spuffard in the Showtime car!".

Meanwhile, Showtime Crew Chief Bob Jarrett has confirmed that his car is also booked for an appearance at the season-ending Flame and Thunder Show at Santa Pod on November 6th.

Something Funny about October Meet.
1st October: Bob Jarrett, Crew Chief of the
Showtime Racing UK Fuel Funny Car team, writes to tell us that his Showtime Fuel FC, in the hands of John Spuffard, will be match racing Dave Bryant and Gordon Smith's Shockwave Fuel FC at next weekend's October Meet at Santa Pod Raceway.

This is an added attraction to what is already going to be an exciting race since the October Meet is the final round of the 1999 UK National, ACU, and Santa Pod Racers' Club Championships (with the exception of the Pro Mod Championships which have been won by Nick Davies). For more details including ticket prices, click on the Next Event icon on Santa Pod's web site.

On the subject of Showtime, congratulations to crew member Chris (also webmaster of the Showtime Racing UK and Trakbyte's UK Drag Racing History sites) on his marriage. First the Crew Chief, then the crew, where will it all end...
